When Will Jesus Return? What the Bible Actually Says

Few topics spark more curiosity, debate, and anxiety than the return of Jesus. Speculation is everywhere—but what did Jesus Himself actually say?

In Luke 21 and Matthew 24, Jesus gives His most detailed teaching on the end of the age. When we read these passages carefully, a clear picture emerges—one marked not by fear, but by confidence, urgency, and hope.

Jesus’ Words Can Be Trusted

Before speaking about the future, Jesus pointed to events His listeners would one day see for themselves. In AD 33, He predicted that Jerusalem would be surrounded by armies, the Temple would be completely destroyed, judgement would fall on the city, and the Jewish people would be scattered among the nations.

All of this happened exactly as He said in AD 70.

That matters. If Jesus’ past predictions came true with precision, then His future promises deserve our full trust.

The Three Ages of God’s Redemptive Plan

Jesus describes history unfolding in three clear stages.

First, the era of Judaism, centered on the Temple, sacrifices, and priests, came to an end when Christ fulfilled what those systems pointed to. Jesus became the true Temple, the final Mediator, and the once‑for‑all sacrifice for sin.

Second, we now live in what Jesus called the time of the Gentiles. This is the age of the Church, where the gospel goes to all nations and people from every background are made one in Christ. This age exists for one primary purpose: to make disciples of all peoples.

Third, this age will end with the visible return of Jesus—when He judges evil, rescues His people, and makes all things new.

Four Signs of the End of the Age

Jesus was clear: we will not know the exact time of His return, but there will be signs.

  1. Increasing deception
False teachers and counterfeit versions of truth will multiply. Jesus’ solution is simple: know Scripture personally so truth can be tested.

  2. Growing global chaos
Wars, disasters, and instability are not new—but Jesus said they would increase in intensity, like birth pains. This is not the end itself, but a signal that something new is coming.

  3. Rising persecution
Faithful followers of Jesus will face growing hostility. Around the world, this is already a reality. Comfort is not guaranteed—but Christ’s presence is.

  4. Widespread falling away
Some who once claimed faith will abandon it, drawn away by false belief systems and spiritual deception. Jesus warned that this would be religious in nature, not merely secular.

Why Jesus Hasn’t Returned Yet

Scripture answers this clearly: God is not slow—He is patient.

Every day Jesus delays is another day for people to hear the gospel, repent, and receive new life. His timing is driven by mercy, not hesitation.

Be Ready, Not Afraid

Jesus’ instruction is not to panic or speculate, but to live prepared lives. The most important question is not when He will return, but whether we are ready when He does.

Knowing all the details of the end times matters far less than knowing what time it is spiritually.

The call is simple and urgent: stay rooted in Scripture, live on mission, grow as a disciple, and remain faithful.

When these things begin to take place, Jesus says, “Lift up your head—your redemption is drawing near.”
